What is a co-sponsor team?
Here are the BIG points you need to know:
Co-sponsor groups are usually made up of 10-15 people. We suggest that team members have a variety of availability (meaning some are available during the day, others at night, others on the weekend). This helps especially during the first two months when our families need to go to a lot of doctors appointments.
We ask for a 6 month commitment from groups.
We also ask that groups contribute $1,100 to our general operating budget. This goes towards one-on-one case management, direct employment services (job club, help getting interviews, going to interviews, securing a job). These funds can be raised through fundraising or contribution made individually by group members.
There will be two basic trainings for cosponsorship and we ask that all members that will have contact with the family on a regular basis attend these trainings. The first is a general co-sponsor training that is typically held on a Saturday morning from 9:30am to 1:30pm. The second training will take place at least two weeks prior to your refugee family's arrival. At this training, we will review some of the key points from the handbook, assign jobs among members and make sure all supplies are ready for the families apartment. This would typically be in the evening during a weeknight and would last about an hour and a half.
The role of cosponsors is to help support Canopy in a variety of ways like furnishing an apartment (Canopy secures the apartment), helping families learn the public transportation system, helping them sort through mail, and helping them navigate the grocery store to name a few tasks. Cosponsors are like welcoming committees, first friends, and so much more.
Who or what groups can participate?
Any group or even person! While Canopy’s cosponsorship teams are mostly communities of faith, we’ve had groups of friends come together to form a team, University professors, college friends, and even community that didn’t know each other until we helped them form a team. That’s the beauty of this—community.
As co-sponsors, you will play a vital role in helping your refugee family integrate into our community. You will be their first friends and their support system outside of Canopy. We call this "co-sponsorship" because it is a partnership between you and Canopy NWA with very clear roles and expectations on how to best serve the refugee family.
