Merry Christmas Nyarugusu!

This year we’re doing our #GivingTuesday a bit different.

This #GivingTuesday Canopy NWA is asking you to help refugees in camp Nyarugusu. As one of the largest refugee camps in the world, Nyarugusu is situated in Tanzania close to the Burundi and Congolese border, and houses over 134,000 refugees. It lacks basic supplies like clothing, as well as opportunities for education and employment. We are so excited three of our former Canopy clients, Abwe, who called this camp home for almost two decades, and Majidi and Rehema, who have heard stories from other refugee clients coming from this camp, have decided to start initiatives to help meet the needs of others. Both have been moved to give back because they have been given so much.

So, we've decided to help Abwe, Majidi and Rehema with their initiatives. All proceeds from #GivingTuesday will go directly to support projects working to bring clothing, empowerment, and education to the Nyaragusu refugee camp. We're asking you to join us in bringing Christmas to camp Nyarugusu this year.

How will your gift be used?

  • To ship a 40-foot container to the camp, filled with clothes, toys, feminine hygiene products and English books for all ages and reading levels.

Our clients have already identified a shipping company to work with, as well as a partner agency who will receive and distribute the donations in the camp. Now all they need to do is fill it up and pay for the container, which will cost about $6,400.

  • To build a small community center with a library (hence the books) and eventually, a computer lab.

Eventually, once the community center is constructed, it will be a place for refugees en route to the US to come learn English and learn about American culture. If this seems like a big undertaking, that’s because it is. But the good news is that construction materials in Tanzania are incredibly cheap and they’ll be able to get the initial structure erected with only $3,600.

SO. All in all, the first phase of this project will cost our clients about $10,000.

They’ve already managed to raise almost $2,000 of that on their own and they’ve got some great ideas for how they can continue to close that gap. But we thought it would be amazing if our community could help them make some real headway with a $4,000 contribution this #GivingTuesday. As an extra incentive, anyone who gives a gift of $20 or more on Giving Tuesday itself will receive a FREE Canopy t-shirt!

We’ll also be accepting clothing of all sizes and for all seasons, toys, books, and women’s sanitary pads through the month of December. You can drop items off at our office located at 2592 North Gregg Avenue, Fayetteville.

What do you say y’all? Let’s support the big dreams of our amazing refugee neighbors, show some love to those who can’t be with us this Christmas, and together as a community, say: Merry Christmas Nyarugusu!
