When Ezzat arrived in the United States in 2023, he carried determination, responsibility, and resilience shaped by years of navigating displacement. Born in Syria and raised in Jordan after the age of nine, his early life was influenced by instability and difficult circumstances, including the loss of his home and loved ones during challenging times. At nineteen, Ezzat made the difficult decision to leave behind his home, friends, and memories to begin again in the United
States.
Like many newly arrived refugees, Ezzat stepped into a new world filled with both opportunity and challenge. He quickly began working multiple jobs, sometimes three at a time, to support himself and help his family while adjusting to a new culture and system.

Through a referral from Canopy, Ezzat connected with a senior services organization that introduced him to a new professional path. With guidance and support, he accessed resources that allowed him to become a contractor providing home care services for people with disabilities. Ezzat also demonstrated entrepreneurial initiative by operating as an independent care provider through a self-directed program as a sole proprietor. He completed 40 hours of professional training to become a certified Personal Care Assistant (PCA).
What began as professional training soon became personal. Ezzat’s parents live with disabilities and certain health conditions, including high blood pressure. Through his caregiving education, he developed a deeper understanding of nutrition, healthcare systems, and daily care. He helped his family improve their routines and health habits, which contributed to better outcomes and fewer doctor visits.

Through his training and experiences, Ezzat also learned how to recognize urgent medical situations and navigate the healthcare system with confidence.
“Understanding the system gave me clarity. It showed me where I could help and where I
needed to step up.”
Growing up with parents who live with disabilities shaped Ezzat’s ability to advocate effectively for others and communicate in caregiving and medical environments. These experiences strengthened his empathy and commitment to supporting individuals and families facing health challenges.
Despite long work hours, Ezzat continues to invest in leadership development. He is currently a member of the National Young Leadership Council (NYALC), where he works alongside other young leaders across the country to develop leadership skills and community initiatives. As part of this work, he is developing a community project called We Are Refugees, which focuses on sharing information to help refugees better understand key aspects of life in the United States, including education, employment opportunities, and cultural systems.

One of the most difficult adjustments for Ezzat has been being far away from his friends in Jordan. However, his relationship with his family motivates him to keep moving forward. Making his family proud and seeing them happy continues to inspire him, and learning about American culture has become another meaningful part of his journey.

Today, Ezzat is studying at a community college and plans to transfer to the University of Arkansas next year. He hopes to secure an internship related to his field of study while continuing his work at Sam’s Club. His long-term goal is to expand his sources of income and eventually work at Sam’s Club Home Office as he pursues his computer science major.

Looking ahead, Ezzat remains focused on growth, discipline, and leadership.
“I believe success comes from discipline, responsibility, and using every opportunity to grow.”
