When Ilham Alqaddour arrived in Northwest Arkansas in 2023, she brought with her something that no journey could take away: her passion for cooking, her resilience, and the dream of building a better future for her family.
Resettled from Syria by Canopy Northwest Arkansas alongside her husband and seven children, Ilham faced many of the challenges common to newly arrived refugee families. Learning a new language, navigating an unfamiliar community, caring for a large family, and rebuilding life from the ground up can make traditional employment difficult. Yet, like so many refugee women, Ilham possessed extraordinary skills that simply needed the right opportunity to shine.
That opportunity came through Canopy’s Inspired Hands program.
Inspired Hands is Canopy’s cottage industry initiative designed to empower refugee women who may be homebound because of language barriers, transportation limitations, childcare responsibilities, or other obstacles. Rather than requiring participants to leave home for work, the program enables women to create products from their own homes while Canopy manages packaging, branding, marketing, and sales. Ninety percent of every sale goes directly back to the women, allowing them to earn income while caring for their families and building confidence in their abilities.
For Ilham, Inspired Hands became much more than a source of income, it became a launching pad.
“Through the Inspired Hands Program, I learned new skills related to work and hands-on experience,” Ilham shares. “It also taught me how to be more organized and manage responsibilities more effectively. In addition, it helped me gain a better understanding of the catering industry, and I started applying what I learned.”
Those lessons sparked something bigger.
As her confidence grew, so did her vision. Ilham realized she didn’t just want to cook for the Inspired Hands marketplace, she wanted to build a business of her own.
Today, she is taking that next courageous step as a member of Canopy’s 10th Entrepreneurship Cohort, where aspiring immigrant entrepreneurs spend twelve weeks learning everything from business planning and marketing to licensing, financial management, customer service, and pitching their business ideas. The program equips participants with the knowledge, mentorship, and support needed to transform their talents into sustainable businesses.
On July 16, Ilham will celebrate another major milestone as she graduates from the Entrepreneurship Program alongside fellow entrepreneurs who are turning dreams into reality.
Her business, Yumma Kitchen, is already delighting customers through its catering services, offering authentic homemade Syrian cuisine prepared with recipes passed down through generations. Every dish reflects her belief that food has the power to bring people together.
As Ilham describes it, Yumma Kitchen serves “delicious food from my kitchen and heart to yours.”
While catering is just the beginning, her dream reaches much further. One day, Ilham hopes to open a full-service restaurant where the Northwest Arkansas community can gather around authentic Syrian food, experience her family’s culture, and create lasting memories over a shared meal.
Her story is one of determination, courage, and the incredible potential that emerges when talent is paired with opportunity.
Programs like Inspired Hands and Canopy’s Entrepreneurship Program exist because refugee families often arrive with valuable professional experience, entrepreneurial ambitions, and remarkable skills. What they frequently lack is access to the networks, resources, and guidance needed to navigate starting a business in the United States. By providing education, mentorship, and practical support, Canopy helps transform barriers into opportunities and empowers entrepreneurs like Ilham to build lasting economic independence.
The ripple effects extend far beyond one business.
When entrepreneurs succeed, they create jobs, strengthen local economies, preserve cultural traditions, and enrich the community with new ideas, flavors, and experiences. Businesses like Yumma Kitchen not only support one family—they become part of the vibrant fabric that makes Northwest Arkansas such a welcoming and diverse place to call home.
Canopy invites the community to celebrate Ilham and the graduates of the 10th Entrepreneurship Cohort at the upcoming Graduation Expo on Thursday , July 16, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. in the Walker Community Room at the Fayetteville Public Library.
The evening will feature opportunities to meet the graduating entrepreneurs, hear their inspiring stories, explore their products and services, and celebrate the hard work that has brought each of them to this exciting milestone.
For Ilham, graduation is not the finish line, it is the beginning of an exciting new chapter. From rebuilding her life in a new country to launching Yumma Kitchen, her journey demonstrates what is possible when determination is met with community support.
The next time you enjoy one of Ilham’s meals, you’ll taste more than incredible Syrian cuisine. You’ll experience a story of resilience, hope, and the entrepreneurial spirit that continues to strengthen Northwest Arkansas.
